Oftentimes, policy HAPPENS TO young people, as opposed to FOR or WITH them. It is only later in their education journey or post- K12 education experiences, that we see the ramifications of neglecting what young people tell us they need to succeed. To best educate a child, we must first know, understand, and appreciate them and all that they come to school with. Policymakers who center our students’ collective needs, listen to what they are telling us (i.e. public testimony, through benchmark scores and formative assessments, behaviors, etc.), and collaborate with the educators and support staff that work directly with students every day are better prepared to create more effective and efficient policy decisions.
If we join together and make our voices heard, we can fight for the change we want to see!
